Concocted in a share house in the South of Brisbane in the mid-80s, a small collective of well-acquainted musicians including Jon Anderson, Rainer Guth, Gary McFeat & Rod Owen gathered to compose film soundtracks, music for pictures, therefore ‘Picture Music’. To this end, a ‘spec’ tape of Picture Music recordings would be produced to give to potential clients and or sold to local stores. A distinct album comprising a collection of ambient, minimal-jazz and experimental music.
If there is a red thread running through the Picture Music album, it is its "late night" ambience. The wrath of the sub-tropical summer heat of Brisbane is not kind on electronic equipment, which would crash regularly by day. So, all recording was done in the relative cool of the late evening, in a room only dimly lit by lamp and candle. The Picture Music collective would make music and party all through the night, departing around sunrise. They would sleep through the heat of the day, only to return in the evening for more of the same.
This 2021 reissue of their self-titled 1987 cassette, was taken from the original master tapes and remains an evocative representation of the music that resulted from the late-night, dimly-lit, atmospheric-enabled environment, that sparked the creativity of a group of like-minded friends in a tiny corner of Brisbane. Dedicated to the memory Rainer Guth.

Colleen St. Ledger’s “Little Light” (pictured) is a painting from the second of her two exhibitions held in the 1980s, “Rembetika”and “Flowers In The Grass”.
Colleen’s work featured on the cover of our ‘Picture Music’ release from 2022 and also on the original cassette from ’86. She initially came in contact with the Picture Music crew as she rented and worked from a small back room at their studio space in Brisbane.
Colleen’s paintings were inspired by the music and poetic-lament songs of Rembetika (songs of the Greek underground 1925 - 47). There were approximately 40 paintings, with a common theme being the indistinguishable and hypnotic female character juxtaposed against a backdrop of colourful patterns, flowers and tobacco.
Colleen was well regarded within the Brisbane creative community. Her works were well received engaging attention from high profile private collectors. Queensland Art Gallery acquired her 1986 International Year of Peace Calendar.
Whilst researching and archiving the music of the Picture Music collective it was hard to look past the distinctive cover art of Colleen and her impact in the significance of the release, luckily while we were locating the master tapes in Rainer Guth/Jan Archurch’s garage “Little Light” was located.
More challenging was locating Colleen. Luckily her niece Harriet reached out on social media and we were able to connect with Colleen, where we caught up in Brisbane and decided to collaborate on a small run of 33 hand numbered and signed prints.

Bedroom dreams of young North Americans in the glittering glow of early rock and roll. It's the spiritual follow-up to Sky Girl and, like that incredible comp, follows an emotional narrative rather than a chronological one. https://www.vikingschoice.org/archive/vikings-choice-2022-reissues-renewals-of-spirit/ Lars Gotrich

Another astounding compilation on Efficient Space to go with Sky Girl and Ghost Riders (2 of the best-curated comps I've ever come across). How do you do it? Just spotted the one you've got coming out in April, just take my money already! Paulie C
